Spaying is the surgical removal of the ovaries (and often the uterus) through a small abdominal incision. From the ASPCA website: "Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases." Spaying your pet will also end her heat cycles and prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Neutering is the surgical removal of both testicles through a small incision in the scrotal sac. From the ASPCA website: "Besides preventing unwanted litters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer, if done around six months of age." Neutering also reduces male pets' instinct to roam and mark their territory with urine.

Spay and Neuter Clinic Requirements:
Rabies Vaccination: In accordance with NY & CT state laws, we require all pets to have a current rabies vaccine. If you are unable to provide us with written proof of vaccination (i.e. rabies certificate), we require that your pet is vaccinated during their visit.
Elizabethan (cone) collar: recommended for all pets to prevent chewing or licking at their incision. A complimentary cone is given at discharge.
*other post surgical devices available upon request*
Flea treatment: any pet found to have LIVE fleas will be treated at the owner's expense to protect our other patients.

Add-on Spay and Neuter Clinic Recommendations:
Pre-anesthetic bloodwork: allows us to assess your pet's liver and kidney function prior to anesthesia. Even in outwardly healthy pets, abnormal blood work results could indicate a higher risk of complications under anesthesia. (Note: Pre-anesthetic blood work is recommended for all pets and required for pets over 4 years of age.)
Microchip - DATAMARS HOME: a tiny chip (about the size of a grain of rice) is inserted between your pet's shoulder blades. They are designed to last your pet’s entire lifetime, and once enrolled, they link to a permanent record of your own information. Our microchip service includes a year of membership with DATAMARS Home complete pet recovery service, which includes: lost pet alerts to local animal hospitals and shelters, a 24/7 emergency medical hotline and travel assistance for found pets.

The spays performed as part of our low-cost program are conventional in a method. If you are interested in a laparoscopic procedure, please see information below, or contact our office at (845) 207-5153 to discuss further.

Laparoscopic Spay: Compared to traditional spay operations, laparoscopic technology reduces your pet's postoperative pain by up to 65 percent. The recuperation period is not only far less stressful, but she will heal much faster and likely need fewer follow-up visits to the pet hospital.
