Spay & Neuter Services at Roosevelt Veterinary Center

Laparoscopic surgery has been used in human operating rooms for years. It has been proven to reduce the length of time patients are under anesthetic, reduces the level of their post-operative pain, reduces bleeding and vastly shortens their recovery time. Now laparoscopic surgical techniques are available for animal operations at veterinary hospitals. At the Roosevelt Veterinary Center in Brewster, we're pleased to offer spay & nueter service operations for pets using laparoscopic surgery instead of conventional methods.

Veterinary Hospitals Spay & Neuter the Laparoscopic Way

In a traditional spay operation a 2- to 3-inch incision is made in the pet’s abdomen. The veterinarian then blindly removes the ovarian ligament from the abdominal wall. The harsh removal of this ligament causes internal bruising and postoperative pain as the animal recovers. In many cases, your pet will be required to stay at the pet hospital overnight to ensure there are no complications. The incision can take up to two weeks to heal and during that time pets often tear open the incision. The incision can also becomes infected, thus requiring additional trips to veterinary hospitals or to the emergency vet and more medications.

When the spay procedure is performed laparoscopically in veterinary hospitals, your pet is anesthetized in the operating room in our pet hospital. Our vet makes one to three small incisions in the abdomen, depending on the size of your pet. The actual laparoscope is a device with a tiny camera on the end of it.

Our veterinarian inserts the laparoscope into the incision and the camera magnifies the ovarian ligament. The operating instrument is inserted into the second incision, allowing the vet a clear and magnified view of the ovarian ligament so that he can carefully cut and cauterize the ligament rather than just blindly tearing it out. Once the incisions are sutured, your pet is observed for a few hours and then sent home from the pet hospital in Brewster, usually the same day.

Compared to traditional spay operations, performing them laparoscopically reduces the pet’s postoperative pain by up to 65 percent, and they will have been under the anesthetic for less time. The animal will have experienced far less stress at the animal hospital, and he or she will heal much faster and likely need fewer follow-up trips to the pet hospital and hopefully none to the emergency room.

Laparoscopy is not only being used for spay & neuter surgeries at veterinary hospitals and the emergency vet, but also for biopsies, hernia repair and other operations, during which having a clear and magnified view of the area is essential. In larger breeds of dogs, the use of the laparoscope aids also in gastropexy, an operation that prevents a dog’s stomach from flipping over and expanding resulting in a trip to the emergency vet.

Brewster spay & neuter services are always cutting edge at Roosevelt Veterinary Center. The next time you need to spay your pet, call us at 845-207-5153 and arrange for a laparoscopic surgery instead of a conventional one at our animal hospital.
